A deep love for the sport of football and a dedication to our community is at the foundation of everything we do. Our flagship flag football league was born of that goal and is our top priority, where we share our love of football and gather with our community. We continue to give back to the sport and look for ways to promote and support football programs in Airdrie!

Opportunity for Youth

The Airdrie NFL Flag Football League was formed to share our love of sport and provide an affordable recreational opportunity for youth in Grades 1 to 9. Our non-contact football league promotes skill development, cardio training and mental strategy. Whether it’s a first experience or in preparation for another minor football program, we welcome all skill levels and aim to show you the fun, recreational side of football. It is also provides a great opportunity for our players to give back to the League by way of Refereeing and Coaching as they get older.

History

In 2016, the Airdrie Football Society (AFS) launched its first-ever flag football league in Airdrie, Alberta, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the community's sports scene. Driven by a passion for football and a desire to offer an inclusive, accessible alternative to traditional tackle football, AFS sought to create an environment where individuals of all skill levels could come together, compete, and have fun.

Over the past nine years, the Airdrie Flag Football program has experienced tremendous growth, beginning in 2016 with just 80 players aged 5-8. Today, it has blossomed into a thriving league with over 300 players, ranging from 6 to 15 years old. This remarkable expansion is a testament to the community's passion for the sport and the dedication of those involved.

The most significant transformation came in the spring of 2023 when Dale and Rayna Hammerly took over the Flag League. They made the bold decision to transition the league into an official NFL Flag League. This shift brought with it the fast-paced, exciting style of play that the NFL Flag rules are known for, making the games even more thrilling and enjoyable for both players and spectators alike.

As we look forward to a new chapter in the program's history in the spring of 2025, with Airdrie Football taking over operations of the Airdrie NFL Flag program, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the incredible individuals who helped shape the league into what it is today.
